International Friendly Report: England Earn Draw In Portugal
Wednesday 18 February 2004
England earned a 1-1 draw against Euro 2004 hosts Portugal in the Algarve, Ledley King scoring on his full international debut.
The Spurs midfielder-cum-defender got on the end of captain David Beckham's free-kick at the far post to put England ahead from close range just two minutes into the second-half.
But Portugal equalised when Pauleta fired in a stunning 20-yard free-kick with 70 minutes gone.
Michael Owen and substitute Joe Cole missed good chances for England, who lost Arsenal's left-back Ashley Cole after just 17 minutes when he sustained a back injury that makes him doubtful at this stasge for Saturday's Premiership showdown with Chelsea.
