South American WCQ Tuesday Wrap: Argentina and Chile Win
Wednesday 31 March 2004
A Hernan Crespo strike in the 60th minute was enough to seal a home victory for Argentina as they toppled Ecuador in World Cup qualifying on Tuesday.
With this result, Argentina moves into first place in the standings. They sit two points up on Paraguay who are in action against Brazil on Wednesday.
Elsewhere on Tuesday, it was Chile beating Bolivia 2-0 as Marcelo Salas made his international return and inspired his team to victory.
Salas set up Chile's first goal in the 38th minute as keeper Jose Fernandez could only parry his swerving free kick and midfielder Moises Villaroel knocked in the rebound with a diving header from close range.
Chile netted their second goal against the run of play in the 59th minute, as striker Mauricio Pinilla jinked past three defenders and crossed over to the far post where Mark Gonzalez slid in and scored.
This is a vital win for Chile as Bolivia are hard to beat at home.
