The AFC President Cup is a club competition for clubs from the AFC emerging member Association. The venue of the competition is Kathmandu, confirmed soon after AFC conducts their inspection visit. After a week long of different opinion and inspection, finally AFC confirmed that the first ever AFC President Cup will be held in Kathmandu from May 4-14.
AFC President Mohamed bin Hammam gave ANFA President the confirmation over the telephone and congratulated him to host the tournament successfully. The venue was on the wings of pendulum when Pakistan had bid to host the tournament. The inspection team had visited both countries to inspect infrastructures available in the two countries. Finally, AFC has given the green signal for Kathmandu as there has been no turmoil situation even though the country is under Emergency rule as of 1st February 2005. The tournament has purse of USD 50,000 for the winner whereas runner up team will walk away with 25,000 USD.
As AFC has given the green signal for Kathmandu to host the AFC President Cup football, everything is under the shape and control even in the present circumstances that country is facing, being under emergency since February 1st 2005. Even from the new formed Government, ANFA, football governing body of Nepal, is getting more support as Minister for Education and Sports Radha Krishna Mainali said that he expected an estimated amount of Rs.5 million to be spent on the renovation of the football ground, floodlights and other infrastructure at the Dashrath Stadium, the venue for next month's AFC President's Cup extravaganza.
An 85-member organizing committee has been formed under Minister Mainali for the tournament. The government would take full responsibility of the overall security management for the tournament. Eight national football league champions from eight countries-Nepal, Bhutan, Tajikistan, Chinese Taipei, Kyrgyzstan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Cambodia-will participate in the tourney.
The AFC President's Cup draw held in Kuala Lumpur saw each group consisting of two teams from South Asia, one team each from Central Asia and the last team in the group from either East Asia or ASEAN.
Group A groups together Three Star Club from Nepal, Transport United (Bhutan), Regar TadAZg (Tajikistan) and Tai Power Company (Chinese Taipei). In the meantime, Blue Star SC (Sri Lanka), WAPDA (Pakistan), Dordoi Dynamo (Kyrgyzstan) and Hello United from Cambodia makes up Group B.
Champions and runners-up of the groups will qualify for the semi-finals on 12 May 2005. |
